TENSES

In this discussion, you should be able to make different of the varieties of /BE/ in Tenses. In this following table, let me please describe the kind and the use of BE in tenses:

The classification above is based on Be's habitual uses and found in many cases. Please trust me that you do not need understand deeply all tenses. For this, you just understand the determiners.

DETERMINER OF TENSES

1. Present Simple

The verb in Present simple must use suffix /-s/ or /-es/ or without the suffixes and the usage of auxilliary /do/ or /does/ either in negative or interrogative form.

For examples:

I need it. (Without suffix)
She tells me everything. (With suffix /-s/ in /tell/)
Mita doesn't work there everyday. (With auxilliary /does/)
Do you understand the lesson ? (With auxilliary /do/)

2. Past Simple

The verb in Past simple must use suffix /-d/ or /-ed/ or without the suffix as well as the auxilliary /did/ either in negative or interrogative form and, in this case, you should understand the changes of Verb in irregular verb (Click here to read about Irregular verb).

For Examples:

She needed it. (With suffix /-ed/)
I didn't know it.
(With auxilliary /did/)
the baby cried loudly

(With suffix /-ed/. Remember that the consonant /-y/ in verb /cry/ should be changed first into /-i/ then add the suffix [ cry --> cr + /-i/ -->>> cri + /-ed/ -->>>>>>> /cried/].

I shut the door yesterday.

(/Shut/ is irregular verb and it is the second verb or past form verb or a verb which is used in past tense because there is past's modifier, that is, adverb of time /yesterday/. Without the modifier, you should read all contexts available...

(Case-1 : Present simple)

Tina is a deligent student. She always tidies up the classroom before class begins. She also shut the classroom's windows and door before going home.

Take notice that the verb /shut/ is in present verb form because all contexts there describes tina's daily activity at school.

Case-2 : Past Simple)

One of their hobbies is playing games with their computer. One day, Tony forgot his login's password. Therefore, he could'nt play his favorite game. When he shut the front door, he remembered that his real password is "door123".

In the context above we find that the verb /shut/ is used in past simple because all contexts decribes the past time activities.
